Three individuals in Uttar Pradesh narrowly escaped death when Google Maps provided an incorrect route. The accident took place at the Kalapura Canal which falls under the jurisdiction of the Izzat Nagar police station in Bareilly.
Divyanshu, a resident of Kanpur district, was travelling with two friends to attend a wedding in Pilibhit district. Relying on Google Maps for navigation, Divyanshu was driving when the app directed them towards the canal track near Kalapura village.
Unfortunately, the bridge over the canal was broken, causing Divyanshu to lose control of the vehicle, which plunged approximately 15 feet into the canal bed. Fortunately, the canal was dry at the time of the incident. According to local witnesses and police officials, the car landed upside down with its wheels in the air.
With the assistance of a JCB and local residents, the police were able to extract the car from the canal. Dhananjay Pandey, the officer in charge of the Izzat Nagar police station, stated that three individuals were travelling in a Tata Tiago, using Google Maps to navigate to Pilibhit.
Due to erosion, the road near the Barkapur intersection, adjacent to the Kalapur Canal, had been compromised, leading to the car plummeting into the canal, he said adding that all occupants of the vehicle escaped unharmed.
This follows another such incident on November 24 in which a speeding car plunged 50 feet into a canal after Google Maps suggested a route that included a broken bridge over the Ramganga River. Three people, including two brothers, lost their lives in the incident that took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun.
