American Airlines has introduced Apple’s Share Item Location feature, potentially making it easier for travelers to be reunited with lost luggage tracked with an AirTag.
The Dallas-based airline transported more than 226,000,000 passengers around the world last year, making it one of the largest carriers in the United States.
American confirmed the new feature to FOX Television Stations.
American Airlines announces Apple AirTag feature
What they’re saying:
“This week, American introduced the ability for customers to easily and securely share the location of their AirTag or Find My network accessory directly with the airline,” a spokesperson for American Airlines said.

The company added: “It’s worth noting that less than 1% of customers’ checked bags are mishandled, and in the rare case that a bag is mishandled, customers are usually reunited with their bag in just over a day. This new feature will help reduce that time even more.”

What’s next:
Customers can generate a link through Apple’s Share Item feature available on iOS 18.2 or later on iPhones, iPads, or Macs and share it with American in the case when a bag is delayed for any trips with a segment from or to a U.S. airport.
Travelers will need to scan the QR code at the baggage office to start their claim and provide their information.

The airline noted that customers can already track their bag through the mobile app and online, which shows once a bag is dropped off at the check-in counter and when a bag is loaded or unloaded from an aircraft.
Backstory
The backstory:
Share Item Location was first introduced as part of the iOS 18.2 update released last December.
According to The Verge, airlines like United, Delta, and Air Canada integrated the Share Item Location feature into their lost luggage procedures soon after it was released. Additional carriers, including Lufthansa Group and Virgin Atlantic, announced support earlier this month.
In Consumer Price Index’s January 2025 report, airline fares rose 7.1% from the prior year, further increasing a trip’s cost. The rising cost burdens families with tight vacation budgets who already feel pressure to put cost first when planning to travel.
