Apple’s next-gen CarPlay was supposed to arrive in 2024. That did not happen. Despite the delay, the company confirms it is working with several vehicle makers on CarPlay 2.
Apple showcased the next-generation CarPlay at WWDC 2022. More than two and a half years later, it is yet to debut on a vehicle.
Apple continues working on CarPlay 2 with automakers
Despite the delay and no signs of progress, Apple highlights next-generation CarPlay on its website. It notes that the next CarPlay refresh will provide the “ultimate iPhone experience for the car.” While CarPlay currently only controls your car’s infotainment system, its next iteration will provide “content for all the driver’s screens, including the instrument cluster.”
Apple previously mentioned that the first vehicles with CarPlay 2 would arrive in 2024. A few weeks into 2025, the company silently updated its website to remove this reference. But the company has not given up on its next big CarPlay update. The company issued a statement to MacRumors about the delay in the launch of the next-generation CarPlay:
“The next generation of CarPlay builds on years of success and insights gained from CarPlay, delivering the best of Apple and the automaker in a deeply integrated and customizable experience. We continue to work closely with several automakers, enabling them to showcase their unique brand and visual design philosophies in the next generation of CarPlay. Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.”
Apple did not provide any timeframe for CarPlay 2’s release, and given the multiple delays, there might be a long wait ahead.
Leaks hint that Apple is continuing development on CarPlay 2, potentially introducing iPhone-style widgets to enhance the experience. The UI will apparently be heavily customizable, and users can place widgets anywhere they like.
