As it has done on every Martin Luther King Jr. Day since 2015, Apple used nearly all of its website homepage to pay homage to the slain Civil Rights Movement leader Monday. The page is filled with quotations from King and links to learn more through a free book by the icon in Apple Books and a feature article about him in Apple News.
Apple dedicates homepage to Martin Luther King Jr. with inspirational quotes, free book
The United States first celebrated King’s birthday as a federal holiday on the third Monday of the month in January 1986. And since 2015, Apple has staged what it calls a Homepage Takeover for the holiday, aka MLK Day. Such takeovers are relatively rare, typically reserved for major product or programming releases. But Apple staged one recently when former President Jimmy Carter passed away at 100 and in 2021 marking the 10th anniversary of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs’ death.
As in recent years, Apple offers a free book as part of its homepage homage in 2025, plus an article about King. To find them, just click on “Explore his legacy” on the homepage under King’s quotes.
The homepage includes photos embedded in cutouts spelling out “M L K” as you scroll down the page. Each image features a King quote next to it:
- M: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.”
- L: “You must decide to speak for yourself; nobody else can speak for you.”
- K: “We cannot preserve self without being concerned about preserving other selves.”
At the bottom, Apple writes “Today and every day, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” And under that, you can click “Explore his legacy” to read more about King and the Civil Rights Movement. The additional free reading this year is through King’s book Why We Can’t Wait (1964) in Apple Books and an article in Apple News, “Martin Luther King Jr, a Misunderstood Icon of US History.”
