Apple has suspended sending out artificial intelligence-generated (AI) news and entertainment summaries to iOS users after receiving myriad complaints about inaccuracies in the notices.

The inaccuracies included news originating from the BBC, The New York Times and other media sources, including a notification that reportedly claimed United Healthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione had shot himself.

Another Times news summary claimed Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had been arrested.

“We are working on improvements and will make them available in a future software update,” Apple said in a statement.

Lionsgate last year parted ways with a third-party marketer after he used fake AI-generated reviews from deceased movie critics for director Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.

Reporters Without Borders, the non-profit organization focusing on safeguarding the right to freedom of information, argues AI should not be used disseminating news and other immediate information until all kinks are eliminated.

“Innovation must never come at the expense of the right of citizens to receive reliable information,” the Paris-based organization said in a statement. “This feature should not be rolled out again until there is zero risk it will publish inaccurate headlines.”
