Apple TV+ has landed a series adaptation of Marissa Stapley’s best-selling novel Lucky, with Anya Taylor-Joy set to play the lead role.
The limited series, on which Taylor-Joy (Furiosa, The Queen’s Gambit) will also be an executive producer, comes from Apple Studios and Reese Witherspoon‘s Hello Sunshine (the novel was a Reese’s Book Club selection in 2021). Jonathan Tropper (Apple’s See and the forthcoming Your Friends & Neigbhors) is the series creator and will serve as co-showrunner with Cassie Pappas (Silo, Griselda).
Lucky will be Taylor-Joy’s second project with Apple; she also stars in the feature film The Gorge, set to debut next year. Witherspoon also has a relationship with Apple TV+ via The Morning Show, where she stars and exec produces.
“Reese’s Book Club began with the goal of deepening connections — to the stories, to the storytellers, and to the community we are building,” Witherspoon said in a statement. “It is incredibly rewarding to be able to amplify these female-centric stories and their authors, see our community connect with them, then see them take on a whole new life on screen. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Apple TV+ and the incomparable Anya Taylor-Joy, plus our brilliant creator Jonathan Tropper and his wonderful co-showrunner Cassie Pappas, to bring this compelling series based on Marissa Stapley’s fantastic novel to audiences around the world.”
Lucky will have Taylor-Joy playing a young woman who was raised in a life of crime but has left that world behind. She must embrace her darker, criminal side one more time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.
“Hello Sunshine continues to do a fantastic job of championing women’s voices and I’m thrilled to be joining the team alongside Jonathan, Cassie and Apple TV+ to bring Lucky to life,” said Taylor-Joy.
Tropper, who has an overall deal with Apple TV+, will executive produce via his Tropper Ink banner along with Pappas, Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, and Taylor-Joy via her company LadyKiller.
Taylor-Joy won SAG, Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards and was nominated for an Emmy for The Queen’s Gambit at Netflix. She stars with Chris Evans, Salma Hayek and Brendan Fraser in the upcoming film Sacrifice; other recent credits include The Menu and Dune: Part Two. Taylor-Joy is repped by CAA, The Way Management and Felker Toczek.
