While there might not be much to look forward to from Apple this year, 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting time with the introduction of new smart home products, including a potentially game-changing smart doorbell that could compete with popular options like Ring.
Apple’s Smart Doorbell with Face ID
Apple is reportedly in the early stages of developing a smart doorbell that integrates Face ID technology. According to Mark Gurman in his latest “Power On” newsletter, Apple is finally turning its attention towards smart home technology. This doorbell could potentially work with third-party HomeKit-enabled locks, although Apple might also partner with another brand to offer a comprehensive all-in-one solution.
Imagine standing in front of the doorbell where an integrated FaceID camera recognizes either the homeowner or a registered guest, unlocking the front door much like unlocking an iPhone or iPad.
However, if this project comes to fruition, it likely won’t launch until at least the end of next year. This device is expected to incorporate Apple’s own Wi-Fi Bluetooth chip, currently under development and codenamed Proxima. This chip would feature a secure enclave to protect user data and enhance security, a core value for Apple.
What to Expect from Apple in Home Automation
There have been ongoing rumors about new home automation products from Apple, including a new version of the HomePod equipped with a screen. This next-generation HomePod would feature a small OLED display, possibly measuring between 6 to 7 inches.
Rumors of a HomePod with a display have been circulating since 2021. Apple is believed to be working on multiple smart home devices, including several HomePod variants with screens. Some models might feature a screen similar to an iPad with an integrated camera, while others could include a screen attached to a robotic arm.
However, it seems there’s a considerable wait ahead. According to Ming Chi Kuo’s latest predictions, the launch could be expected around the end of the year, leaning towards the third quarter. He notes that the development of the system has seen delays, particularly with software development issues. Initially set for a 2024 release, it was pushed to the first quarter of 2025 and has been delayed further post-WWDC 2025.
Both Mark Gurman and Ming Chi Kuo suggest that the device might be repositioned more as a home control center rather than just a smart speaker. This new device, codenamed J490, could be powered by an A18 chip and at least 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence features, and it would also include a 6 to 7-inch display. Beta versions have already hinted at a new product category, similar to the existing HomePod, which falls under the AudioAccessory category.
