Data from Counterpoint Research shows that China’s smartphone sales dropped 3.2% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2024—the only quarter of the year to show a drop. Attributed to cautious consumer spending in face of economic difficulties, the slowing down followed three straight quarters of increase.
With an 18.1% share, Huawei reclaimed the top position during the quarter; its first time leading since a U.S. ban limited its activities. The introduction of its mid-range Nova 13 series and high-end Mate 70 series drove the company’s success and helped to explain a 15.5% year-over-year sales rise.
Driven by its flagship Mi 15 series and advancement in the premium class, Xiaomi (XIACF, Financials) came second with a 17.2% market share. With a 17.1% share, Apple (AAPL, Financials) fell to third position as Huawei and Xiaomi in the high-end market became more competitive.
China’s smartphone market expanded 1.5% year over year, reversing a 1.4% drop in 2023. For the whole year With 17.8% Vivo had the most yearly market share; followed by Huawei at 16.3% and Xiaomi at 15.7%.
Counterpoint Research forecasts low single-digit market growth forward to 2025. Although the launch of a national smartphone subsidy program in January is projected to boost sales in the first quarter, continuous economic difficulties might restrict general annual growth.
