In a new incident, an Apple Watch was involved in saving a man’s life after his car crashed into a neighbor’s swimming pool.

On December 16, Apple Watch user Brent Hill from Easthampton, MA, was driving home and felt nauseous while driving the vehicle. He had a blackout and had his weight shifted to the accelerator, which caused the vehicle to speed up significantly. The car picked up speed and hit a neighbor’s garage and into the swimming pool, according to reports from WesternMassNews.
Gladly, the Apple Watch stepped in and called the emergency services while he was unconscious. Hill does not remember what happened due to his blackout, and once he started gaining consciousness, he heard a tiny voice talking to keep him calm.
“When I saw the footage of my car careening down the street and crashing, I was shocked because of how fast I was going.”
It appears that Hill’s Apple Watch used the Crash Detection feature and called emergency services automatically. The operator was trying to communicate with him and help him remain calm, which proved to be quite helpful, according to Brent Hill. Hill stated:
“If emergency services had not contacted me through that watch and just coached me through that, there’s no way I would’ve got out of there.”
The rescuers arrived within minutes for Hill, and while he could not hear anyone from outside the car, the operator continued to keep him calm, which helped him a lot in this situation. He added:
“I didn’t know where I was and that person just kept me calm and, if that probably not have happened, I probably would have drowned.”
Hill was taken to the nearest hospital after being rescued, where he received medical attention for minor injuries. Hill’s neighbor also credited the Apple Watch and praised the Crash Detection feature for its efficiency.
“My husband was upstairs and so he called 911 and he was on the phone with 911 and they said Oh yeah, we’re talking to the driver right now’ which later we found out is the beauty of the Apple Watch.”
“They were comforting him because he was saying the water was coming in and I just thought that part was miraculous.”
It is great to see how Apple has equipped the Apple Watch with various novel health-centric and emergency features that have proven life-saving on various occasions. The company is also expanding the list of health and other features this year with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 11 and watchOS 12.
