Apple’s foldable iPhone is finally taking shape, and we have been hearing a lot of details on the company’s brand-new entry into the market. The company wants its first foldable to be perfect in all regards, including the crease on the display, and it also wants to avoid any known issues. The hinge will possibly be the most important part of the foldable iPhone, and a prominent analyst claims that Apple will use liquid metal for better durability.
Apple’s foldable iPhone will use a liquid metal hinge for enhanced durability and to reduce the screen creasing
We have previously reported that Apple plans to introduce a foldable iPhone with no visible crease on the display, and it appears that an advanced hinge mechanism will be involved. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will use a liquid metal hinge, which will not only enhance the durability of the handset, but it will also reduce screen creasing. Reportedly, the company selected liquid metal to address the common issues associated with a foldable display.
The liquid metal will be manufactured using a die-casting process, which will allow the hinge to function in a way that enhances screen flatness and minimizes the crease marks on the front. We have previously seen crease marks on foldable smartphones from Samsung, Google, and a handful of other Android manufacturers, and it appears to be the main concern for users at this stage.
The analyst also claims that Apple has previously used liquid metal material for its SIM ejector pins, but the foldable iPhone will be the company’s first product to use the material on a broader scale. Apple has tapped Dongguan EonTec to exclusively supply liquid metal for the foldable iPhone.
As we have mentioned earlier, Apple is getting closer to launching its first foldable, and it was recently reported that the inside display of the device will be 7.8 inches, while the cover display will measure 5.5 inches. We believe that the device will have more or less similar dimensions to the Google Pixel Fold, but it remains to be seen which direction the Cupertino giant will go in. Furthermore, it was also reported that the company will opt for a book-style design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold instead of the Galaxy Z Flip.
It was also recently reported that the foldable iPhone will house a dual rear camera setup and a single camera on the front. Similar to the iPad Air and iPad mini lineup, the foldable iPhone will also feature Touch ID in the Home Button instead of Face ID. It could also be Apple’s thinnest device ever when unfolded, measuring just 4.5mm, but when folded, the device could be as much as 9.5mm thick. Mass production of the device is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2026, which could indicate that the device will see daylight early in 2027.
