Data supplied by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed the motor swatted away the Kia Sportage SUV into second place after it racked up 48,340 new owners last year.

The Nissan Qashqai made it onto the podium in third, while the Nissan Juke scooped fourth place.

See the full list below, with data from January to December 2024.

1. Ford Puma – 48,340 units

Just like in 2023, the Puma has scooped the top spot – consistently selling across the year due to its affordability and fun driving dynamic.

The compact crossover has been praised for its versatility with it being a great family car or a flashy number to take for a spin.

It has even out sold the Ford Transit and Transit Custom vans this year, say Autocar.

The Ford Puma was first released in 2019 yet continues to be a firm favourite with Brits and across Europe.

2. Kia Sportage – 47,163 units

The Kia Sportage looks great, drives sweetly, and has the right mix of hybrid engines, useful tech and practicality, starting from £29k.

It’s the do-it-all family SUV.

“Sportage is the backbone of our brand. It just evolves and goes from strength to strength,” Kia boss Paul Philpott beamed.

“We’ve never set out with goals to become No1 brand or No1 car line but the success of Sportage is a clear endorsement of how much progress Kia has made and how Sportage appeals to lots of different customers.”

3. Nissan Qashqai – 42,418 units

The practical, hybrid, and hi-tech Qashqai ranks highly as a stalwart choice for motorists in the UK and for good reason.

Sensibly priced at just shy of £30,000, the motor is big enough for all the usual family debris, small enough to thread down a busy road and to park at Tesco.

And for an SUV, it is a stylish and eye-catching pick.

4. Nissan Juke – 34,454 unit

The Nissan Juke boasts uprated front suspension, big brakes, and quick steering.

All of which combine to make the car feel more controlled, darty and fun for petrol heads.

And deservedly, it makes the shortlist for the UK’s most popular motor.

5. Tesla Model Y – 32,862 units

The Tesla Model Y is the only EV to feature in last year’s top 10 breakdown.

The model now boasts a fresh battery, which appears to have gone some way to overcome its sharp slump in sales.

And it doesn’t intend to stop there.

In 2025, Tesla say they will look to revise the vehicle’s styling and interior.
