Bluesky, what used to be a less-known social media platform, is growing rapidly day by day. The platform has seen a sign-up surge lately and stands as a rival to Threads and X (formerly Twitter) these days. Bluesky, which crossed 15 million users just a week ago, has now passed the 20 million users mark today.
Bluesky passes the 20 million users mark today
Bluesky’s user base has nearly tripled in the last three months. The official app has had several days in the last week where a million users signed up in a single 24-hour period similar to Threads. Although Bluesky isn’t as big as its rivals Threads and X, the current momentum is notable.
According to App Figures, Bluesky ranked as the top app in Apple’s App Store for six days straight. Additionally, the app has been ranked as a top non-gaming app for four days in the Google Play Store. It’s not that Bluesky hasn’t seen significant growth in the past. However, the recent surge in the number of users is far bigger than what the social platform has previously seen.
X appears to be the main reason behind Bluesky’s ongoing growth
If you are unaware of the growing popularity of Bluesky, Elon Musk-owned social media platform X is the reason behind it. These days, when users on X come across unpopular changes, they start migrating to other platforms offering similar features. Bluesky appears to have benefitted the most from this.
According to a report from SimilarWeb, Bluesky saw massive traffic on November 7, the next day of the US presidential election. It’s worth noting that the traffic surge came as X saw a number of account deactivations on the same day.
In October when the Brazilian government banned X in the country over a misinformation feud, Bluesky reportedly gained nearly 2 million new users. As Bluesky continues to grow, the company recently addressed its users saying it won’t train AI on their posts. In addition, it also assured users that they don’t have any intention of doing so in the future.
