BMW has slammed the brakes on a £600 million investment into its Mini car assembly plant on the outskirts of Oxford because of stalling demand for electric vehicles.
In a fresh blow to Labour’s flagship plan to deliver economic growth, the German car making company has said that it will review the timing of plans to manufacture battery electric Minis at the works in Cowley.
BMW insisted that Plant Oxford, as the works are known, are “at the heart of Mini production” of cars that are exported around the world.
“However, given the multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry, the BMW Group is currently reviewing the timing for reintroducing battery-electric Mini production in Oxford,” the company said.
