Car plunges into Potomac River after crash on Arlington Memorial Bridge, officials say – Dayton 24/7 Now

A car flew off the Arlington Memorial Bridge and into the Potomac River after colliding with another car Thursday evening, according to the D.C. Fire and EMS Department.

Officials said that shortly before 7 p.m., they received a call about a crash between two cars on the bridge. One of the cars flew off the bridge and into the water of the river, and one of its occupants was taken to a local hospital in a life-threatening condition. The other car remained on the bridge, and one of its occupants was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Divers also responded to the scene and worked to recover the person in the water, officials said.

The crash prompted major road closures, officials said. All lanes of the Arlington Memorial Bridge between the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Rock Creek Parkway/Ohio Driver NW were blocked in both directions.

Officials held a press conference to share more details about what occurred. Watch the press conference below.

Officials ask the public to seek alternate routes, as they continue their investigation.
