CCPD: Roadways and bridges a 'mess' as ice removal efforts continue – WTOC

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Ahead of another expected refreeze, the City of Savannah’s Transportation Department was fully mobilized Friday working to clear slush and ice from roadways.

Victory Drive between Barnard and Montgomery streets was closed for several hours Friday while public works crews scraped ice off the road.

Conditions on highways and main roads have improved, according to transportation officials, nearly three days since a rare snow and ice storm paralyzed the region.

The focus appears now to be on side streets and local roads, many of which are covered with a sheet of ice.

“It was a little squirrely,” said Nicole Baertsch & Josh Edgemon who are visiting Savannah from Florida. “It was a little scary getting here.”

While crews made progress on some roads Friday, travel troubles continued elsewhere.

In a Facebook post, the Chatham County Police Department described roads and bridges as a “mess.”

“The roads and bridges are not back to normal. Many bridges are down to one lane. You need to approach these bridges slowly,” said an online post from CCPD.

Parts of the Veterans Parkway near the Little Ogeechee River bridge were closed Friday as wrecks cause hours-long backups.

Meanwhile, other roads reopened including the I-95 southbound to I-16 eastbound interchange according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Police are urging drivers to remain off the roads. If they do have to go out, drivers are being asked to slow down and allow plenty of space between you and other vehicles.
