An MBTA commuter rail train and a car collided in Concord on Sunday evening, officials said.

The driver of the car sustained minor injuries, according to Fire Chief Thomas Judge of the Concord Fire Department.

It was unclear on Sunday evening how the collision occurred.

“We are grateful that this incident did not result in more serious injuries,” Judge said in a news release. “Our crews, along with our police and EMS partners, responded quickly to provide care and ensure the scene was secured.”

Around 7 p.m., the Concord Fire Department responded to Conant Street crossing gate where a crash had occurred between a commuter rail train heading west to Fitchburg and a car, according to Judge.

The crash occurred while the train was moving at a “low rate of speed,” Judge said.

The sole occupant in the car was taken to Lahey Clinic with minor injuries, according to Judge.

The MBTA Commuter Rail posted to X at 7:53 p.m. that the Fitchburg Line Train 2411, which was set to leave North Station at 6:15 p.m., was terminated after West Concord “due to a road vehicle on the right of way.”

“Passengers will be accommodated by an extra train for continued outbound service,” the post said.

The incident is being investigated by MBTA police, according to Judge.

Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said in an email Sunday evening that transit police “are investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.”
