GODFREY — The Community Christmas fundraising event Cookies and Cocoa raised more than $1,900 this week as the season of giving continues.

The 13th Cookies and Cocoa for Community Christmas founded by Freer Auto Body, , 4512 N. Alby St., in Godfrey, with homemade cookies from co-owner Margaret Freer is usually manned by her granddaughters Taylor Freer, 19, and Lily Freer, 16. But while Taylor is away studying at Baylor University in Texas, Lily represented both sisters at the Dec. 6 fundraiser.

People stopped by to drop off money, toys or coats and got cookies and hot cocoa.

The United Way’s Community Christmas fundraiser event has been held every year since 2008, except one year because of the pandemic. Community Christmas also is sponsored by The Telegraph.

The first Community Christmas event of the season, Christmas in July, raised more than $56,000 this summer, the biggest year yet for the summer fundraiser founded by the Freer siblings.

“We still count our blessings and appreciate all God and the community has done for us. Taylor and Lily want to make sure all children have a special Christmas,”  Margaret Freer said.
