In addition to announcing global Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra flagships at MWC 2025, Xiaomi showed off another rather interesting phone. A custom Xiaomi 15 phone with a magnetic clip-on camera lens has been shown.
A custom Xiaomi 15 phone is used to demonstrate a magnetic clip-on camera lens
Thanks to that magnetic clip on camera lens, this is more or less a modular camera smartphone. It has a magnetic ring on the back that allows you to attach a custom camera module with a larger sensor and zoom lens.
The shown camera system includes a large 4/3 sensor and a fast f/1.4 lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length. Needless to say, such camera prowess opens up new possibilities. You can make this device be more of a camera than a phone.
One thing to note here is that this won’t be a consumer product, at least not yet. This custom phone was shown off just to tease the public, it’s a concept phone that the company is working on.
This tech is referred to as the ‘Xiaomi Modular Optical System’
Xiaomi refers to this as the ‘Xiaomi Modular Optical System’. The design of the phone is less important here, of course. It used the Xiaomi 15 as the baseline for this concept, but if at one point this system becomes a reality, chances are that the final product will look different.
The company only made between 10 and 20 of these concept devices. Xiaomi also pushed out a promo video that showcases this new technology.
You’ll notice a magnetic ring on the back of the phone, at the middle of its backplate, to be accurate. In addition to that, this concept phone also has a standard set of cameras on the back. We were also able to check one out at MWC 2025.
Two pins on the camera lens allow for an “instant hardware connection”
There are two pins included on the camera lens provided with this concept phone, which create an “instant hardware connection” with the phone, once you place it on that ring. Xiaomi refers to this connection as ‘Laserlink’.
Let’s hope this technology will make it to consumer products at some point, it sure is interesting.
