Don't like someone's cringy Instagram comment? You'll love this feature

We’ve all done it; we’ve all gotten into an argument on social media over something ridiculous. Most of us would just like to share a downvote or thumbs-down and be over with it, but not every platform has that luxury. Well, according to a new post, Instagram could get a dislike feature for comments.

As noted by Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri, this is only a test at this point. This means that most users won’t see the feature. Also, it means that there’s no guarantee that the company will push this feature to the final version of the app. So, you will want to take this news with a grain of salt.

Instagram might let you dislike comments

There are a few platforms that let you dislike posts and comments, so Instagram isn’t breaking new ground here. In fact, people tend to prefer having the ability to dislike content on the internet. YouTube’s decision to hide the dislike counter was met with almost unanimous disdain.

Also, how can you know which Reddit comment is the most degenerate without seeing a -24 upvote counter? Being able to show your dislike of something is a large part of internet culture, whether we like it or not.

This is probably why Instagram is testing a dislike button. You won’t be able to dislike posts, but you’ll be able to dislike comments. It won’t be similar to how it is with Reddit where you can get a good idea of how people reacted to a comment. In fact, there won’t be a dislike counter. Also, the person who posted the comment won’t be notified.

The company may use this system to get a good idea of which comments are more generally liked among the posts. This way, the company could prioritize comments that have the least number of dislikes and push more favored comments to the top.

At this point, we don’t know when Instagram will let you dislike comments (if at all), so you’ll want to be patient with it. Until then, you can keep sharing your dislike through heated comments calling other commenters idiots.
