A man died in a crash between his car and a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department SUV in an Apple Valley intersection, local authorities said.
The fatal crash took place just after 4 p.m. Saturday at Bear Valley and Kiowa roads, according to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District logs.
A deputy was responding to a “priority call,” sheriff’s department spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez said, when the vehicle collided with a Toyota Corolla in the intersection.
The driver of the Toyota was the sole occupant and died at the scene, according to Rodriguez. The deputy was treated for minor injuries, she added.
Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage, according to video footage from the scene.
No further details were available as the investigation remained in its early stages Saturday afternoon.
The intersection was expected to remain closed into evening hours as authorities conducted an investigation.
