More specifically, most accidents happen between 8am and 9am in the month of September as drivers get used to being back on busy roads.

Admiral says it’s the morning school run when accidents are more likely to occur, with 33% more accidents during the morning drop-off than afternoon pick-up.

Lorna Connelly, head of claims at Admiral Insurance said: “Our roads are about to get much busier again in rush hours, as parents join the traffic when the schools return in September.

“We’re urging all drivers to take extra care on the roads this month as our claims data from the last 3 years reveals September is the highest month for accidents during school run hours (between 8am and 9am and 3pm and 4pm).

“Our findings reveal one in seven car accidents in September happen during these hours too, so extra care is needed.”

Admiral has offered advice to drives in light of the data to keep them safe in September.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for trips so time pressures and frustrations don’t cause simple mistakes.

Also, they should consider other motorists when parking their car, to ensure a flow of traffic can get through.

Being attentive to cars directly in front of you is important too, as is leaving ample space to brake and react, as incidents during this time most commonly involve hitting another car’s rear.

Lastly, drivers should relax and try to avoid road rage incidents.

If another driver is being confrontational or aggressive, don’t make eye contact, don’t react and let them go on ahead.

Lorna Connelly continued: “Since 2019, around a quarter of the accident claims reported to us, that took place during the school run, were for cars being hit in the rear, which can be caused by driving too closely and not paying attention.

“This goes to show how important it is to ensure that during busier periods on the road you are attentive and patient when behind the wheel.”
