Durability tests show Huawei's tri-fold smartphone is delicate, as expected

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design is the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. It was announced by Huawei recently, and JerryRigEverything managed to get its hands on it. In a series of durability tests, he showed that Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone is delicate, as you’d expect.

Huawei’s fri-fold smartphone goes through a series of durability tests in a video

He showed that in an 11-minute video on YouTube, which is embedded below the article. This phone has two hinges, and its main display is exposed at all times. On top of that, it’s extremely thin. So… the fact it’s delicate is not exactly surprising.

The foldable display has a layer of plastic on top, and it can be scratched with a fingernail if you’re not careful enough. That means you should be extremely gentle with the phone, as that display is exposed even when the phone is folded, both on the front and on the side.

The frame is made out of aluminum, and the vegan leather on the back is as resistant to scratches as on any other phone. The ring around the camera island is made out of metal too.

This phone’s screen lasted about 10 seconds under a direct flame before it started discoloring and “literally melting”, which is not surprising considering there is plastic on top of it.

The Huawei Mate XT even faced a ton of dirt during these tests

Zack, a guy behind the JerryRigEverything YouTube channel, even threw some dirt on the phone itself. The hinges did get filled up with dirt following that and started crackling pretty badly.

The phone also did snap when Zack applied pressure on it, as expected. Now, all of this does sound bad, but keep in mind that this is the world’s first device that is unbelievably thin when unfolded and has two hinges.

The Huawei Mate XT is definitely not for you if you don’t plan on being careful with it. It also does warm you when you try to fold it in the wrong direction, both on screen and via its vibration motors. Zack also pulled apart at the end of this video, if you’d like to see that.

He also acknowledged that this is probably the coolest phone on the planet at the moment. It, however, is not the most durable one, though, but that’s fine. This is a world’s first, after all, and it’s not made to be a rugged device or anything like that. Also, as a reminder, this phone is coming to global markets in Q1 2025.
