Kolkata is witnessing a surge in interest among auto drivers to adopt electric vehicles (EVs), with 29% of drivers expressing willingness to make the switch, according to a recent study.

The study, conducted by Clean Air Network (CAN) and SwitchON Foundation, in collaboration with the Tollygunge Auto Union, reveals a clear economic advantage for e-autos. Drivers using electric autos incur an average monthly cost of INR 3,670, compared to INR 11,508.60 for LPG-powered autos. This stark difference underscores the long-term financial benefits of transitioning to e-autos. Along with cost savings, e-autos contribute to environmental sustainability, a key consideration as Kolkata strives to improve its air quality.

The study, titled “A Shift Towards Sustainable Transportation: Willingness of Kolkata’s Auto Drivers to Embrace E-Autos,” surveyed 453 auto drivers from areas such as Tollygunge, Garia, Ruby and Ballygunge. It found that while 71% of drivers were open to switching to CNG and 29% were interested in electric vehicles. Key drivers included lower fuel expenses (39%), govt incentives (31%) and green concerns (30%).

However, many remain hesitant about switching to e-vehicles. A large portion of drivers expressed concerns over battery breakdowns (32%), insufficient charging stations (27%) and longer charging times (21%). Additionally, 70% of drivers cited the shorter refuelling time of CNG as a major advantage.

To address these challenges, a roundtable discussion was organised, bringing together auto drivers, mobility experts, auto unions, and university professors.

Ajay Mittal, executive consultant of SwitchON Foundation and co-chairperson of India Clean Air Network, emphasised the importance of educating auto drivers.
