EV vs gas drag race between Ferrari and electric MG car is way closer than you’d expect – Supercar Blondie

In a drag race designed to pitch one of the world’s fastest EVs against a worthy gas-guzzler, this electric MG Cyberster versus Ferrari 812 Competizione sprint was much closer than you’d expect.

EVs have been doing lots of work to prove they can match the best combustion cars on the planet.

But aside from the odd Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air victory, there hasn’t been too much to shout about for speedy EVs.

However, one of the quickest off-the-line cars is now looking to rewrite the racing books by taking on a fierce Ferrari.

Ferrari 812 Competizione versus electric MG Cyberster drag race

The Ferrari 812 Competizione is peak Italian sports car manufacturing. In fact, it’s often touted as one of the best cars to come off the Rosso production line.

The pinnacle 812 finds itself in the personal collections of Formula 1 Ferrari star Charles Leclerc and recently-departed red Carlos Sainz, which tells you all that you need to know about this sports car.

But, could a relatively underrated EV take it down in a gas versus electric straight sprint?

Well, YouTube creators CarExpert have pitted the MG Cyberster against this galloping horse.

The MG Cyberster is no slouch, though. The 2023 EV from the Chinese production line boasts an impressive 400kW of Torque, which could be ideal for short races.

The Mazda has a much slower top speed than the Ferrari, maxing at 124mph. But the electric start could be enough to get it over the quarter-mile line quicker than the incredible Competizione.

The results

Typically, EVs get off to a better start than gas cars in drag races. Thanks to launch modes and speedy moor startup times, they often surpass the manual shift of gas cars.

This common theme rang true for this race. The MG Cyberster scorched off the line and into a commanding lead.

But the Competizione wasn’t lying down. The stallion cantered after its opponent to dip its neck over the line at the last second and take home a photo finish gold.

Heat two ended with the same result. The MG shot off quickly, only for the 1/4 mile finish line to come too late.

A rolling start race saw the MG Cyberster perform admirably, considering the Ferrari 812 Competizione was a clear favorite in this department. Still, it lost.

The Ferrari put up a best 1/4-mile time of 10.99 seconds, while the MG recorded an 11.42 best.

The MG is definitely a fierce competitor. But the ultimate EV in the Tesla Model S Plaid might be the undoing of the Ferrari racecar.
