Evangelion Returns to Its Original '90s Anime Roots With New Recreation of Misato's Iconic Car – CBR

The Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise is most known for its iconic mecha, but these aren’t the only rides in the series. Now, another notable vehicle from the series is joining a long-running line of toy cars, but it’s no EVA unit.

The Tomica Premium Unlimited No. 08 Rebuild of Evangelion Alpine Renault A310 is based on Misato Katsuragi’s car from the classic anime series. Tomica has released toys for several cars and vehicles from anime, and the legendary mecha franchise has now entered the garage. Ironically, despite its designation, the new toy is based on the first iteration of Evangelion and not the newest.

Misato’s Car from Evangelion Drives Into Tomica Premium Toy Series

Part of the Tomica Premium Unlimited line, No. 8 in the series is an Alpine Renault A310. This is the car that Misato Katsuragi drives in the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, with the car itself notable for being an EV. The Tomica Premium line takes cars and vehicles from various franchises and recreates them to realistic detail, with the preceding car being the 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R from 2 Fast 2 Furious. In the case of the blue Renault A310, it emulates every recognizable aspect from Evangelion, including the custom headlights, the motor and Misato’s license plate.

This is one of several Evangelion diecast toy cars to be announced or released in the past year, though it’s one of the few with an actual basis in the series itself. Despite being billed under the title of the Rebuild of Evangelion reboot movies, Misato drove the car in the original 1990s Evangelion anime, with the reboot having her instead drive a white Mazda. Misato herself is seen on the packaging of the car, but the actual toy vehicle sadly doesn’t include a representation of her. It’s now available to order internationally for 1,320 yen, or roughly US$8.50, and is expected to ship out to customers in February 2025. The new year marks the 30th anniversary of the first airing of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, with the new Tomica being merely one element of this nostalgia.
