NEW photos have given fans a first look at a reborn ’80s classic as it was spotted testing just months ahead of its re-release as an EV.
The beloved hatchback was seen back on the road for the first time in 28 years as it cruised around rural Hertfordshire this week.

The original Renault 5 hit showrooms in 1972 and was one of the most popular cars in Europe throughout the ’80s.
It was eventually discontinued in 1996 after recording sales figures in the multi-millions.
However, the French brand has since announced that the name plate will make its return early next year in the form of an electric supermini based on its classic predecessor.
Preview images have been officially released, but the new motor has now been snapped out and about on UK roads as it undergoes final tests.
The car was seen riding up and down B-roads in Rickmansworth earlier this week.
Running on trade plates, the 5 features a boxier appearance than the retro version, likely to accommodate the new battery pack.
Customers are expected to be offered the choice between a 40kWh and 52kWh spec, made possible by a new inverter.
The nifty tech has allowed Renault to offer a battery roughly twice the size of that in the electric Zoe while saving 100kg in weight.
There have also reportedly been improvements to the handling and suspension, with an emphasis on driver experience.
The smaller option is set to carry a range of 186 miles, while the larger battery tops out at 249 miles.
Rapid charging will be available on the 40kWh model, while both will be equipped with bi-directional power transfer.
This allows drivers to charge up when electricity is cheaper and then sell some back to the grid during peak prices at a profit.
The service is already available in France via the Mobilize smartphone app and seems likely to come to the UK.
Renault hasn’t confirmed a release date yet, but the 5 is expected to go on sale in the Spring.
Prices are believed to start from about £25,000, instantly making it one of the cheapest EVs on the market.
Bosses say that using the ready-made platform from the Clio has allowed them to undercut bespoke rivals like the £28,000 Fiat 500e.
