Flappy Bird clone is open source, free to play, and just 100kb

A clone of the insanely popular Flappy Bird is finally here. Incidentally, this authentically recreated game has nothing to do with Flappy Bird’s original creator.

Flappy Bird clone not from Dong Nguyen

The original Flappy Bird game, created by Dong Nguyen, is one of the biggest viral sensations. It earned the creator tens of thousands of dollars in earnings per day.

Nguyen abruptly pulled Flappy Bird from smartphone app stores for altruistic reasons. However, the Flappy Bird Foundation recently indicated the original Flappy Bird will return soon. Strangely, the game’s creator wasn’t a big part of the relaunch.

According to Android Police, an enterprising developer has created and published a clone of the original game. Identified as VadimBoev, the creator of the Flappy Bird clone claims he built the game with the smallest possible footprint. Specifically speaking, the APK (Android installer file) is less than 100Kb in size.

It is important to note that this clone has nothing to do with the Flappy Bird Foundation and certainly not with Dong Nguyen. Still, the game could be considered safe to download and install because the entire code is open source.

How to install and play the clone?

The recreated version of Flappy Bird is available as an APK. The entire project is hosted on GitHub. Its creator hasn’t uploaded the APK on any of the app stores. The Flappy Bird clone can be sideloaded on an Android device, a privilege that might not be available for long.

Multiple social media posts have appreciated the clone and admired the attention to detail. In other words, the recreated version appears to be a near-perfect replica of the original Flappy Bird.

Back when Flappy Bird was a viral gaming sensation, most of the smartphones had displays locked at a 60Hz refresh rate. However, many smartphones today have displays with 90Hz, 120Hz, and even higher refresh rates.

Playing the Flappy Bird clone at these framerates can be challenging. Hence, gamers should consider lowering the framerate of their smartphone to 60Hz if they wish to enjoy the game in its original form.
