Ford will assemble batteries for electric cars in Romania

The car manufacturer Ford will assemble batteries for electric cars in Craiova, based on battery cells produced in another location, say local sources from Craiova consulted by Economedia. The company did not want to confirm the information.

Thus, the actual assembly of the batteries will take place in Romania, that is, the last step of the battery production process. Assembly will be carried out at Ford’s factory in Craiova.

The assembly line, developed in the engine division, would already be completed, through the company’s own funds, according to Economedia information.

We remind you that Ford will produce three electric vehicles in Craiova, starting in 2024. The company announced that it will build a 100% electric version of the Puma compact SUV at the Craiova plant, starting in 2024. At the same time, Ford began to produce the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier models in Craiova, in diesel and gasoline versions, but the electric versions will also be manufactured, under the names E-Transit Courier and E-Tourneo Courier.

Last year, in July, Ford Otosan announced an investment of 490 million euros to support the production of the new generation of the Courier range at its plant in Craiova, which, along with the Puma model, will benefit from fully electric versions in 2024. Following this investment, total production capacity will increase from 250,000 to 272,000 vehicles per year.

In 2022, the Ford factory in Craiova was taken over by the Turks from Ford Otosan. Currently, Ford Otosan Romania is owned by Ford Otomotiv Sanayi A.Ș. (Ford Otosan) – Ford joint venture in which Ford and Koç Holding are majority shareholders. Ford Otosan is a listed company (18%), in which Ford Motor Company (41%) and Koç Holding A.Ș. (41%) own equal shares, and is one of the top three exporting companies in Turkey since 2004.
