Northampton will start charging electric vehicle drivers about $2 per hour to charge their vehicle starting next week, a move that will help city taxpayers avoid paying almost $62,000 annually, the mayor announced Wednesday.
Starting Sept. 30, Northampton residents and visitors will have to pay $1.92 per hour to charge their electric cars, a price that allows the city to break even on its service, Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra said in a statement.
“The city is not interested in earning revenue from EV charging stations — this fee is carefully calculated to cover the city’s costs to provide electricity and maintain the charging network,” the statement read.
