Game Awards 2024 biggest reveals: Witcher 4, Onimusha, and more

With The Game Awards 2024 now over, there were some pretty exciting reveals throughout the evening that give gamers a lot to look forward to. Some of those reveals will be coming sooner than others. If you want to watch the entire stream of the Game Awards 2024 yourself, you can do so through the YouTube video embedded at the bottom of this post.

If you plan to watch the stream but still want the cliff notes on the biggest reveals, we’ve got you covered. And oh boy were there some real doozies. One of the biggest reveals was The Witcher 4. This is the first time that CD PROJEKT actually called it The Witcher 4 officially. Not the first time it acknowledged the game’s existence, however. A new Onimusha game was also revealed (finally, it’s been nearly two decades), and there were announcements for PC releases of popular PlayStation titles.

All-in-all, it was a great show and admittedly much more exciting than the show from 2023. Mainly because there were so many new exciting reveals of stuff to come. Here were the biggest reveals of the night.

The Witcher 4 gets a cinematic reveal trailer

Arguably one of the biggest reveals of the night was The Witcher 4. Up until the show, the game had only ever officially been referred to as Project Polaris. Even then it was pretty obvious that the next mainline game was going to be The Witcher 4, starting the series off with a brand-new trilogy of games.

At The Game Awards 2024, CDPR gave fans their first look at the game through a cinematic. The trailer also shows off the game’s new protagonist (or presumably the game’s new protagonist), as Ciri now appears to walk the path of a Witcher. Ciri was long-rumored to be the new main character of the next game, and the cinematic seems to confirm that. While the cinematic is very cool and surely exciting for true Witcher fans, there is unfortunately nothing known about the game beyond what the cinematic shows. Which does not include a release date we might add.

Onimusha returns after nearly 20 years

The first Onimusha game was released as Onimusha: Warlords in 2001. The last true game was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006. So it’s been 18 years since another Onimusha game has graced players with its presence. For fans, this has essentially been a dead franchise, feared to be laid to rest by Capcom. Thankfully, fans were greeted by a big surprise last night with a trailer as one of the reveals at the Game Awards 2024.

The camera pans over a dark and foreboding landscape in the early Edo period of Japan. At first, it’s not clear what the game is. Then little red whisps left behind by defeated Genma are sucked into someone wielding the Oni Gauntlet. Right then, it was obvious this was a new Onimusha game. The reveal trailer also shows off some actual gameplay. Onimusha is back, baby!

The Last of Us studio gives a first look at its new IP – Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

Naughty Dog has been so caught up in remasters and PC ports of both games in the Last of Us series, that it’s been a while since fans have known anything other than the studio’s two biggest franchises. The Last of Us and Uncharted.

During the Game Awards 2024, we finally got our first look (a surprise we might add) at the studio’s new IP. It’s called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and it’s a narrative-driven action game. Naughty Dog hasn’t shared much about the game’s story other than a brief statement in its official announcement.

“Intergalactic stars our newest protagonist, Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago. In fact, anyone who’s flown to it hoping to unravel its mysterious past was never heard from again. Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit,” Naughty Dog Studio Head Neil Druckmann says.

This is Naughty Dog’s first entry in the Sci-Fi genre and it officially takes inspiration from Akira and Cowboy Bebop. Two pieces of anime media that to this day continue to shape and inspire everything from other anime to games, and even film.

A new standalone Elden Ring game is coming in 2025

For fans of FromSoftware and the deeply complex and challenging games that come from it, there’s always a need to know more about whatever the next thing is. Since Elden Ring just got its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion earlier this year, the last thing people were probably expecting to see last night was a new game coming from the FromSoftware team. Let alone a title that’s coming out in 2025.

And yet, there was a reveal for Elden Ring: Nightreign. This will be a standalone game and not an expansion for the main Elden Ring base game. It’s also not going to be quite like the Elden Ring you know. It’s a co-op roguelike of sorts where players must fight to survive in a parallel Lands Between over the course of several in-game nights. Each night players must survive and get stronger, while also defeating a major boss. The ultimate goal will be to defeat the Night Lord.

There aren’t a lot of details about the game yet in terms of gameplay features. However, eagle-eyed sleuths have pointed out that there are at least a few bosses in the trailer that appear to be from other Souls games outside of Elden Ring. Intriguing.

Warframe gets a new expansion

Warframe has been a long-running looter shooter that’s been around since 2014. So it’s kind of a surprise that it’s still doing as well as it is, while also still getting tons of new content. The latest piece of new content will be Warframe: 1999. This is a new expansion that as one would have it, has launched on December 13. That’s right. You can play through the new expansion right now. You can also check out the trailer below.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth lands on PC in January

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second game in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, and it’s been out on PS5 exclusively since February 29, 2024. Now it’s finally going to be coming to PC with an official release date of January 23, 2025. That’s a little over one month away.

If you don’t already own it on PS5, or even if you do and you just want to play with new features and improved graphics, you won’t have to wait too long to get your hands on it.

Players will be treated to a host of improvements. This includes Variable Refresh Rate enhancements. As well as NVIDIA DLSS, several graphics presets, and frame rate support up to 120 frames per second.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered will hit PC in April 2025

The Last of Us has been redone a few times over the years across PS4, PS5, and PC. That being said, Part II Remastered has yet to be made available on anything but PS5. That changes next year with an official release date of April 3, 2025. Like with the PC release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players can expect several graphics enhancements that really only the PC platform can deliver.
