Gemini app for iOS gets model switcher to access 2.0 Flash Experimental

It’s been just over a month since Google finally released the Gemini app for iOS. Now, Google is also rolling out an update to the iOS Gemini app that introduces a model switcher to select the 2.0 Flash Experimental.

The Gemini app gets a model switcher to access the 2.0 Flash Experimental on iOS

The latest change to the Gemini app for iOS comes after Google announced a model switcher last week. You can now switch between different models like the 1.5 Pro, 1.5 Flash, and 2.0 Flash Experimental within the Gemini app. Do note that Google added support for the same on Android a few days back.

Google says that the Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental beats the 1.5 Pro on key benchmarks at twice the speed. The company further notes that it will allow Gemini to be more helpful as an assistant. However, the Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental “Might not work as expected” and currently doesn’t support file upload.

The changelog for the iOS Gemini app version 1.2024.4970016 also highlights two new extensions for Google Home and Google Photos. With these extensions, you can now control your smart home and access your photo library directly from Gemini. That said, 9to5Google notes that the extension for Google Photos is currently unavailable. You might also have to join the Public Preview to see the Google Home extension.

Moving on, the non-Gemini Advanced users will find a row of new conversation starters above the text field. Meanwhile, the “Advanced” users can now save personal information to get a more relevant response from Google Gemini.

The latest app update adds more languages to Gemini Live

The latest update introduces multiple language support for Gemini Live and the app itself. Now, Gemini Live is available in 21 more languages including Chinese, Dutch, Urdu, Korean, Romanian, Bengali, Telugu, and more.

Whereas, the iOS Gemini app is now available in 11 additional languages. This includes Bulgarian, Estonian, Gujarati, Kannada, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Serbian, Slovenian, Swahili, and Urdu.

Finally, the latest Gemini model might be available for the general public in January. Moreover, the agentic Deep Research feature could hit general availability in early 2025 after launching on desktop/mobile web.
