Google is rolling out the ability for its Gemini AI assistant to search your photos.
9to5Google has spotted that Google has commenced updating the Gemini app on Android with a powerful new Google Photos extension. This means that you can ask Gemini to find particular photo types using natural language.
This can include searching for descriptions of photos, such as ‘my photos shot from airplane windows’ or ‘recent selfies’. It’ll also pick up on any relationships you’ve set in the Photos app, so you can search for specific people.
More advanced applications include the ability to “ask for important details found in your photos”. Some of the examples cited include “what did we eat at the hotel in Stanly?”, or “what’s my driver’s license number?”.
Tapping on the Gemini results will then take you into the Google Photos app, with the ability to view further images based on your request.

How to use Google Photos on Gemini
This new Gemini Google Photos interaction is being released “gradually to a select group of invited users”. I’ve checked, and it isn’t active on my Google Pixel 9 Pro here in the UK at the time of writing. It seems to be available only to select US users for the time being.
When available, it seems you’ll be able to activate the Google Photos function by entering the Gemini app and tapping on your profile menu, then navigating to Apps and scrolling down to the Media section.
Google Photos should then appear as a toggle option alongside Spotify, YouTube, and YouTube Music.
The app should respond to prompts such as ‘my photos’ and ‘@ Google Photos’ in order to pull out custom albums from your Google Photos backup.
