Getting Netflix for Free from T-Mobile? Your Bill Might Go Up

Netflix is the most popular video streaming service in the world. To sweeten the deal for its subscribers, T-Mobile has been covering the full cost of Netflix’s ad-supported plan for some of its subscribers, and for higher plans, it merely provides a solid discount to make things a little more affordable. It’s a nice bonus.

However, we recently reported that Netflix has just introduced another price hike—the third in three years, with plans increasing from as low as $1 extra per month to $2.50 extra. That amounts to a lot over time, and it seems T-Mobile doesn’t want to front that bill for everyone. Some T-Mobile users are going to see their bills go up as a result.

If you’re a T-Mobile customer, you likely know that the company hasn’t been stingy with offering its subscribers free and discounted Netflix subscriptions. It’s definitely not something that any customer is going to complain about. Well, when the carrier decided to make sure that everyone that was getting its Netflix bonus had to use the Standard with Ads plan, that was something to complain about.

Anyway, despite the streaming service’s recent price hike, you don’t need to worry about having to pay anything extra if you were already getting Netflix completely free courtesy of T-Mobile. It will continue to be free, according to The Mobile Report, and that is a good thing.

The Standard with Ads plan is a cheaper way to get access to most of Netflix’s portfolio, but the operative word there is “most”, as some of the content is locked away from you. It is also closer to a traditional TV experience since you get ads in the middle of your viewing experience. But hey, if you’re getting it at no extra cost, it is what it is.

If you’re not a fan of ads, you can choose to upgrade to the regular Standard plan or the Premium plan on Netflix. You’ll be free of the marketing being thrown at you in the middle of a climactic scene. Ordinarily, if you chose to move up from the plan that T-Mobile is offering free of charge, you’d get a $6.99 discount on your bill every month. The Standard and Premium plans are more costly, so the company just takes a little off the top instead.

Well, absolutely nothing is going to change from T-Mobile’s side—you’re still getting a $6.99 discount off the Standard and Premium plans each month. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but what that means is that with the associated price increase on those plans, you’ll be the one taking care of what Netflix has added, not T-Mobile.

For Standard users, that means their monthly bills will show $2.50 extra on the Standard plan and $2 extra on Premium. With the discount applied, it does mean you’re only paying $11 for Standard and $18 for Premium now, which is still a good deal, but it something to keep in mind before you get blindsided by a higher than usual bill.
