Glen Paul School hosts 9th annual Transportation Day – KRCR

Glen Paul School held its 9th annual Transportation Day today for students with special needs to get familiar with specific tools in the community.

The event expands on traditional learning by bringing public and emergency vehicles to campus for a fun, up-close, and hands-on experience.

“Nine years ago, we were talking in our classroom about how to have our students experience vehicles more up close and personal because we were studying transportation in our class and I invited a fire truck out and then a police car, and slowly it evolved to 13 vehicles and a school-wide event,” said Glen Paul School Teacher and Event Organizer, Rachel Lyon.

Transportation Day teaches children with special needs about different vehicles that serve the community, from busses, tow trucks, police cars, fire trucks and much more. Students were allowed to get inside the vehicles for demonstrations of how they operate.

“They remember the event even afterward, bringing the book home with them, the families like to hear what their children were able to participate in and enjoyed the event,” said Lyon.

This event also helps children become familiar with emergency and rescue personnel as it can help reduce their fears if they are ever in a situation of a real-life emergency or when they need to be rescued.

“I think it’s important to have kids not be scared of us, and I also think it is important that they know that if ever there was an emergency, we will come to help, and we will help make them be safe,” said Humboldt Bay Fire Captain, Colin Beddow.

We appreciate Glen Paul School and all emergency agencies for making this event possible.
