Google announced in August 2024 that it would stop manufacturing its Chromecast TV dongle. Now, 9to5Google is announcing that the Google hardware is no longer available for purchase through Google’s online store, marking the end of the product after more than 11 years.
Shalini Govil-Pai, the company’s head of TV, has previously said that the reason for the closure was that competition had begun to intensify among the slightly cheaper streaming devices.
Google has therefore chosen to replace Chromecast with its new streaming solution Google TV Streamer, which contains more advanced hardware but also costs twice as much as the previous product.
The company has previously said that existing Chromecast 4K and Chromecast HD devices will receive security updates until September 2025. Other models will be supported for much longer.
