Google has announced that Chrome’s enhanced protection now offers safe browsing to over one billion users against phishing and online scams. Google has also shared some insights on how Chrome’s Enhanced Safe Browsing Protection feature works to safeguard you against phishing and online scams. Furthermore, a separate report has revealed that the search engine giant is creating a new AI function for Chrome that’ll take action to help protect you from data breaches.
Google Chrome’s Enhanced Safe Browsing Protection feature uses AI models to safeguard against phishing
Google has revealed that the Chrome browser’s Enhanced Safe Browsing Protection functionality utilizes advanced AI and machine learning models to differentiate between trusted websites and online scams. It is capable of preventing malicious file downloads by regularly scanning suspicious files against advanced scanners. These AI models can spot known phishing, social engineering, and scam techniques.
Google has trained Chrome’s enhanced protection AI models to identify scam URLs that resemble trusted domains. It can compare suspicious pages to known attack patterns to safeguard the users on the internet. Google mentioned that the enhanced browsing feature can protect users from malicious downloads by running “more than 300,000 deep scams of suspicious files against advanced scanners every month”.
According to the company, Chrome’s new safety feature can even protect users from threats hidden within encrypted archives. The enhanced protection functionality also anonymizes data, including URLs, page contents, files, etc., to safeguard user privacy whenever possible. Google said that Chrome only uses this user data for “security purposes, and retained only as long as necessary”.
In all, Google said that Enhanced Protection users are “two times as safe from phishing and other scams when compared to Safe Browsing’s Standard Protection mode”. You can enable the Enhanced Protection feature by visiting Chrome Settings > Privacy and security > Security > Safe Browsing > Enhanced Protection.
Google is working to push its in-browser AI more by offering assistance to protect your data online
According to a tipster on X, Google is developing a new AI feature for Chrome that’ll shield you from data breaches. Google is supposedly creating an “Automated password change” AI feature. This AI can automatically detect whether hackers have exposed your password to an online service or a website. Then, it can auto-change the password and save it to Chrome’s password manager.
It’s worth mentioning that Chrome already has a feature like this. However, it only notifies the user of the necessity to change their password, nothing more. The tipster has dug up the “When Chrome finds one of your passwords in a data breach, it can offer to change your password for you when you sign in” description in a Chrome Canary deep dive. Google could release the new AI tool to all Chrome users on the web in the coming weeks.
