Google Gemini will make Snapchat's "My AI" chatbot even smarter

Google has been in search of clients for Gemini AI to boost its business for some time now. Today at the Gemini at Work digital event, Google made some big announcements around its AI model. The Mountain View giant has announced a strategic partnership with Snapchat to power Generative AI (Gen AI) experiences on the platform’s popular chatbot “My AI.” In simpler terms, Google is supercharging Snapchat’s chatbot with its in-house AI model Gemini.

Snapchat’s “My AI” chatbot now uses Gemini to become even smarter

Snapchat first launched the My AI chatbot last year. The company initially used OpenAI’s GPT models to power its chatbot. However, these AI models from OpenAI were trained on texts and additional safety and controls unique to Snapchat. Now, with the Gemini upgrade, My AI can utilize Google’s LLM power to process audio, video, and text simultaneously. You must be wondering how this is important for an end user, right?

In a real-life scenario, this would mean snapping images of a street sign in a foreign land and asking My AI to translate it. Another example could be taking a video of snacks and asking Snap’s AI chatbot which one is the healthiest. Yes, the features are quite similar to what you may have seen with Google Lens. Ever since Snapchat integrated Gemini, it has seen a 2.5 times boost in engagement within My AI in the US.

The company has shown intentions to integrate Gemini into its AR glasses too

Talking more about the partnership to harness Gemini’s capabilities for My AI chatbot, the CEO of Snapchat Evan Spiegel says “This partnership with Google Cloud reinforces everything that’s so important to serving our community. Snap is all about empowering people to express themselves, live in the moment, learn about the world, and have fun together. Now with Gemini in My AI, Snapchatters can learn so much more about the world, do it really quickly in the moment, and easily share that with friends.”

The company is also considering Gemini to power some features within its newly launched AR smart glasses. Not to forget, these AR glasses connect to Snapchat and are compatible with the My AI chatbot. Besides, it might use AI to power new features, target ads, and content recommendations. In short, we might see artificial intelligence taking over Snapchat further down the line.
