Google has finally announced the date of its next big event, Google I/O 2025, at which we’re expecting to learn more about its smartphone AI plans.
The event is set to take place on Tuesday 20 May and Wednesday 21 May, which is just 14 weeks from today. It’ll take place from the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, and will be live-streamed at io.google.
That’s about it for solid information from Google, though we have a pretty good idea of what will and won’t be on show at the event.
What to expect from Google I/O 2025
Google hasn’t gone into any specifics, though on an associated blog post it does promise its “newest products, technologies, and innovations in AI, Android and more”.
It sent the below invitation to Tech Advisor showing a Glastonbury festival vibe for the event.
One thing that almost certainly won’t be announced at Google I/O 2025 is the Google Pixel 9a. In a departure from its normal approach, Google will reportedly be announcing its new mid-range smartphone on 19 March.

This should leave the way for Google to focus more on pure software, which the event was originally set up for. It is a developer-focused event, after all.
In particular, Google should be able to further indulge its current obsession with AI through its Gemini assistant. The I/O website mentions Gemma open model, Google AI Studio and NotebookLM and there’s also a game you can play called Prism Shift.
We’re also expecting to get a look at Android 16.
On the hardware front, we wouldn’t completely discount the possibility of an appearance for the Pixel Tablet 2. Might we even catch a glimpse of a Pixel Ring?
Oura and Samsung have already launched their own health-focused wearables, and Google’s Fitbit team presumably has some time on their hands now that its parent company has gone all in on the Pixel Watch.
This is mostly wishful thinking, but we can dream/speculate wildly.
