Google is about to open out its Gemini AI assistant to kids, with the idea of supercharging their homework.
The big G has sent out an email to parents informing them that Family Link-supervised kids under the age of 13 will soon be able to access Gemini apps through Android, iOS, and web.
However, it also issued some warnings and advice on how to manage their access to this powerful (if still flawed) tool.
Google’s advice on Gemini for kids
Much of the advice that Google offered to parents mirrors that of this support post, titled Manage your child’s access to Gemini Apps.
This warns parents that “Gemini is new and evolving, and can make mistakes”, and that its filters may fail to pick up on some inappropriate content.
Google exhorts parents to “Help your child think critically about Gemini’s responses”.
That includes helping children to understand that Gemini isn’t human, despite its breezy conversational style. It also highlights the importance of double checking Gemini responses, and not taking them as read.
Google also highlights that kids should not enter sensitive or personal info into Gemini.

How to activate or deactivate Gemini for kids
None of which comes across as a ringing endorsement of Google’s powerful AI assistant, but it all needed to be said.
Fortunately, Google makes it relatively easy for parents to toggle Gemini for kids on or off.
Just head to the Family Link website or app, select your child, then tap Controls > Gemini > Gemini Apps. Now simply toggle Gemini Apps on or off.
