Google Pixel 11’s face-scanning feature may work in the dark

Google’s Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro utilize the old camera-based face unlock system. This feature works quite well in better lighting conditions. However, when it comes to dark or low-light situations, Google phones fail to unlock as desired. But, Google is going to address this problem in a future Pixel device. According to Android Authority, Google’s Pixel 11 series could get an upgraded face-scanning feature that will work even in dark conditions.

Google Pixel 11 could have under-display IR face-scanning tech that’ll work even in the dark

According to the source, the Google Pixel 11 series smartphones will flaunt a new face-scanning technology. They will allegedly have an under-display IR (infrared) camera system, which will work efficiently in dark lighting conditions. The Pixel 11 series’ Tensor G6 chip’s advanced image signal processor (ISP) might add support for this functionality.

Notably, previous reports have also suggested that Google is currently developing the Tensor G6 SoC, which will power the Pixel 11 series. Furthermore, there are reports that the Pixel 10 series will get the Tensor G5 chip, but there’s no information if the SoC’s ISP will support face-unlocking in the dark.

A more secure and versatile face-unlock functionality

As per the report, some documents have appeared in a massive leak from Google’s chip division. The folks over at Android Authority have viewed and labeled them credible. If the report is true, then get ready to experience a more secure and versatile face-unlock feature on the Pixel 11 series smartphones.

It’s worth mentioning that the Pixel 11 won’t be the first Pixel to offer a face-unlocking feature that works in the dark. The Google Pixel 4 already offered this neat feature years prior. The phone relied on a dot projector, two IR cameras, and a flood illuminator to offer this functionality. It was able to recognize your face in all lighting conditions. However, we will have access to a more advanced unlock functionality in the Pixel 11 series.
