If you are a Google Pixel user and often find yourself accidentally picking up or rejecting a phone call, the new incoming call UI being tested for the Google Phone app won’t make things any better for you.
As you may know, many Android phones including the latest Pixel 9 series with the Google Phone app pre-installed currently display a single button whenever you receive a call. If you want to answer the call, you simply have to swipe up on the phone icon. Whereas, rejecting a call requires you to swipe down. Interestingly, that incoming call UI could soon become a thing of the past.
Google is reportedly testing an iPhone-like incoming call UI screen for its Phone app
A few days back, a Reddit post showcased the new incoming call UI for the Google Phone app. In addition, folks over at Android Authority today reported that they’ve also spotted something similar. The new incoming call UI for the Google Phone app reportedly adopts the two-button layout as seen in iPhones and other Android phones from brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.
The new calling screen now features a red button on the left side featuring a landline icon with the text “Decline” placed underneath. While on the right, there’s a green button. It features a slightly tilted landline icon indicating the position one would hold the phone while answering a call. On top of that, there’s a text “Accept” underneath that button. It is worth noting that this change was spotted in version 145.0.672690850 of the Google Phone app.
There’s no surety if or when Google will roll out the new incoming call UI
It is worth noting that Android Authority couldn’t test the feature at their end. So, it is possible that the testing is happening on the server side. If Google pursues this new incoming call UI for the Phone app, it could be a nightmare for those who often suffer pocket dialing and end up accidentally answering or rejecting a phone call.
That said, Google hasn’t announced anything as such as we write. Therefore, it is safe to speculate that it could be just a test and not a confirmed change. Moreover, the company might decide the future of new incoming call UI based on user feedback.
