Google testing 'real time' search result updates

Google seems to be testing a new version of the Google Search app that updates results in real-time. The method could bring Google Search closer to the Gemini Live AI chatbot.

Google testing real-time search results with natural language prompts

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) platforms have been rapidly making inroads into people’s lives. Internet users are increasingly relying on Gen AI to answer multiple queries in quick succession.

Similar to how AI chatbots answer queries, Google Search may offer search results. Google is reportedly working on a conversational version of Google Search. In other words, Google Search may refresh results in real time as users speak.

According to AssembleDebug on X (formerly Twitter), Google is testing a voice search mode that will refresh results in real-time. As the brief demo indicates, a user can essentially have a conversation with the Google Search app. The search results page adjusts content based on the conversation.

Why is Google mimicking Gemini Live?

There appears to be a remarkable shift towards Gen AI. Internet users are relying on Gen AI platforms to answer their queries. This might mean users could be moving away from Google Search.

Google appears to be trying to make its Google Search app align with the latest trend. Simply put, Google could be trying to make its search platform as interactive and intuitive as an AI chatbot.

Google Search users have long been able to use their voice to enter queries. However, the search results have always been limited to individual queries. In other words, even if the queries were sequential, users had to enter them one at a time.

Moving forward, tapping the microphone icon in the Google app could call up a voice-to-text visualizer. The Google Search app would then fetch search results according to the queries in a conversational manner.

Google Search already has Gemini AI Overviews. However, search results are still not as easy flowing as with any Gen AI chatbot.

It is important to note that Google hasn’t released the version of Google search shown in the Tweet. The company could be internally testing the experimental conversational mode that allows users to ask follow-up questions.

Interestingly, Google already offers conversational speech support with Gemini. Hence, it could be only a matter of time before Google Search offers the same feature.
