It seems that the possibility of downloading a malicious app from the Google Play Store has once again been reduced.
Google has announced a new verification badge for VPN apps, helping users distinguish secure and trustworthy applications from the vast selection available on the Play Store.
The badge, displayed as a shield with a checkmark and the word ‘Verified’ underneath, appears in both search results and on an app’s details page.
It signifies that the VPN app complies with Google’s Play safety and security guidelines and has completed the Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation.
By implementing this verification system, Google aims to help users identify reliable VPN apps while enabling developers to showcase their commitment to security.

There’s a reason why we’ve put together a list of the best VPN services out there, as they are crucial tools for online privacy and security. However, users often struggle to determine which services are genuinely safe and effective.
The new ‘Verified’ badge addresses this issue by providing clear indicators of an app’s security credentials. To qualify, VPN apps must meet stringent criteria, including:
- Successfully passing the MASA Level 2 security assessment
- Operating under an Organization developer account
- Meeting Google Play’s target API level requirements
- Achieving a minimum of 10,000 installs and 250 reviews
- Remaining on the Play Store for at least 90 days
- Submitting a Data Safety section declaration, which includes opting into independent security reviews and ensuring encryption in transit
While these are the core requirements, Google also considers additional factors when awarding the badge.

Several leading VPN providers, including NordVPN, Hide.me, and Aloha Browser, have already embraced the ‘Verified’ badge, seeing it as an important step in strengthening user trust.
For other developers interested in earning the badge, Google encourages them to begin the validation process and ensure their VPN app meets the necessary security and transparency standards.
