I think most of us enjoy reading a good book, even if we never find the time to actually do that—yes, I am guilty as charged. I realized I wasn’t reading enough and that was exactly why I made the decision a few months ago to buy myself an 11th-generation Kindle Paperwhite.
Well, that was bad timing. Amazon just revealed the 12th generation of Amazon Kindle devices and a lot has changed or been improved. For one, the Kindle Scribe has changed completely and Amazon has introduced the Kindle Colorsoft, the first-ever model with a color screen.

Anyone with a Kindle will tell you how great a purchase it was. I have a Kindle myself and while I haven’t used it as much as I’d have loved, I’ve certainly read more in the time I’ve had it than I have in the last two years.
And now, the best part is that those Kindles we all knew have gotten even better. This is a pretty solid upgrade, so let’s talk about each device.
The Amazon Kindle
If you don’t need special features or doodads, the base Kindle is always a great place to find yourself. It’s small, with a 6-inch matte display; and it is light, weighing just 158 grams—lighter than essentially any smartphone these days. The screen is 25% brighter than the last generation, it turns pages faster, and there’s a new Matcha colorway.
Besides that, admittedly, nothing changes with this particular Kindle. You get the same amazing battery life and 16GB of storage, starting at $109.99 for the ad-supported model.
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
Now, the Kindle Paperwhite brings just enough over the regular Kindle to make it the popular choice. Now, in the 12th generation, it gets even better. The 6.8-inch display is out, a new 7-inch display with the highest-ever Kindle contrast ratio is in. You also get 25% faster page turns.
Did I mention that it is also the thinnest Kindle ever made? Yet, despite that, you still get a battery large enough to offer as much as three months without a charge. The 12th-gen model is also only available in a 16GB configuration, which is good since my previous-generation Paperwhite only has 8GB. Both have IPX8 certification.
You can also consider the Paperwhite Signature Edition, which comes with 32GB of storage, an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness, and wireless charging. The Kindle Paperwhite starts at $159.99 while the Signature Edition pushes the price tag up to $199.99.
The Amazon Kindle Scribe
I’ve always glanced upon the Kindle Scribe with admiration, but only from afar; it’s not the kind of thing I’d make good use of. However, if you love the idea of a Kindle mixed with a digital notebook, you’re going to love the new Kindle Scribe.
The new design has white borders for a more paper-like illusion. It has a large 10.2-inch 300 ppi display, and thanks to the textured finish on the screen, using the Premium Pen to write on it feels a lot like writing on paper. The device also brings Active Canvas, a feature that lets you write directly into the pages of the book, and your notes stay where you want, even when the layout of the book changes due to a larger text or a different font.
There’s AI at play too, as the Kindle Scribe’s notebook can read your notes for you and help summarize everything into concise bullet points. The device is available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB configurations and will start at $399.99.
The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft
And last, but certainly not least, is an entirely new entry in the Amazon Kindle lineup. It took 12 generations, but the first color Kindle is finally here in the form of the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition. That’s competition for Kobo’s color e-readers.
You get everything you want from the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition: a 7-inch display, wireless charging, 32GB of storage, IPX8 water resistance, and automatic brightness. However, its trump card is obviously that color screen, letting you enjoy your books and their images in a new dimension.
The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft costs $279.99, which is a lot more than the regular Paperwhite Signature Edition. However, color might be worth it for you.
