How to know if your car is breaking down in cold temperatures – news9.com KWTV

Slick spots on the road aren’t the only concerns for drivers in an Oklahoma winter. Temperatures alone can cause problems for a car before even leaving the driveway.

Proper maintenance and a good understanding of what signs indicate trouble in a car, will keep drivers from being stranded during a breakdown. Carlos Ramirez, the head mechanic at The Mechanic Bulldogs in Oklahoma City, shared some of his tips for keeping a car in working condition.

Q: What’s the most common issue for a car in cold weather?

A: Ramirez says batteries are the root of many problems with cars starting in cold weather. He says a battery check if you haven’t had one in a while, can help determine the strength of a battery.

He also recommends double-checking battery terminals or loose cables to ensure they are sitting properly. Replacing a battery can typically be done at home, or with the help of a mechanic.

Q: How can I check my tires?

A: “Make sure your tire’s thread is good enough, it will prevent you from slipping on the roads,” Ramirez recommended. “And make sure you have all-weather tires, not just regular tires.”

Q: What do I do if my car breaks down?

A: If your car breaks down, if possible, get the car out of the roadway. Roadside assistance companies, such as AAA, also advise against getting out of your vehicle but say to be cautious of traffic if you do.

“I usually keep jumper cables, a first aid kit, emergency kit, as well as a blanket,” Ramirez said. “You never know when you need a blanket, or some snacks on the side.”
