Huawei has just announced a launch date for its Android-free operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT. Huawei will announce it in China on October 22, during a press conference that will kick off at 7 PM China time.

That time translates to 1 PM CET / noon BST / 7 AM EST / 4 AM PST, in case you’re interested. The press conference will be in Chinese, however, so not many of you will be able to understand what’s going on. We’ll report back once it’s official, though, of course.
This operating system has been in development for years, and Huawei will finally make it official. It will completely ditch the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and support for Android apps. It will replace it with its in-house code and belonging applications.
Based on the latest report we’ve seen, there are over 10,000 HarmonyOS NEXT apps available out there already. Huawei is constantly adding more, though, as the company partnered up with a ton of companies in China.
For the time being, it seems like the development of apps is heavily focused on China. It remains to be seen when will HarmonyOS NEXT arrive to global markets.
It seems to look identical to HarmonyOS, but without support for Android apps
HarmonyOS NEXT actually seems to be visually the same as HarmonyOS but without Android app support. Huawei developed its own microkernel operating system based on the OpenHarmony open-source code.
It is worth noting that this OS also supports apps via the Ark Complier with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). Huawei has also promised a seamless unified architecture between HarmonyOS NEXT devices.
We will get a lot more details in a week once the company officially announces the OS and all it has to offer. Truth be said, we don’t see this OS making its way to global markets just yet. Huawei has to prepare a ton of apps first. Though, who knows, perhaps Huawei has been doing that behind the scenes. It remains to be seen.
