Human Service Transportation Program seeks to simplify transit in rural areas – WIFR

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The Regional Transportation Committee meets to discuss the Human Service Transportation Program.

The goal is to create more collaboration between the Human Service Organizations and Illinois Department of Transportation in Boone, Carroll, Jo Davis, Stephenson and Winnebago counties.

“IDOT provides the funding to these organizations, and basically the purpose of the HSTP program is for agencies to work together to provide better transportation and efficient transportation,” says Jeffrey Waxman, program manager for IDOT.

The committee members announced the plan to build a new bus garage in Carroll and Boone counties. They also discussed the need for more buses and staff, especially for night shifts.

Melissa Ohrwall is a program manager for IDOT. She says rural areas need towns and organizations to partner together to answer the communities’ needs.

“Sometimes when we think of transit in Illinois, we think of the CTA, and there is a lot of these rural communities who don’t have that kind of service, but they are transit providers in those communities that are doing the best they can to make sure everyone is able to get to where they need to go,” says Ohrwall.
