I drove the ‘cleverest Mercedes ever’ – the new CLA has a ‘superscreen’ dash and a VERY impressive range

THERE are many things we need to discuss about the new Mercedes CLA.

First, it’d be no good for a hit-and-run.

Your victim would be imprinted with a galaxy of 142 stars from the front grille.

They’d know you did it.

Second, that “superscreen” dash contains all sorts of AI-based software, 3D game-engine graphics, Will.i.am music apps and goodness knows what else.

Bosses described it as the “cleverest Mercedes ever”.

Third, range. Merc is quoting 492 miles from the CLA 250+.

Which is way more impressive than all of the above.

You might need to recharge once a fortnight.

Plus, it can suck up 186 miles of electrons in just ten minutes.

There’s a new super-efficient 1.5-litre petrol hybrid coming later that can do short distances, and up to 62mph, as an EV.

Price? I reckon £50k. Whichever powertype you choose.

The battery-powered CLA hits the road this summer.

The petrol just before Crimbo.

This little car is such a big deal for Mercedes, a special animation was projected on to London’s County Hall to coincide with the international launch.

Three other models will share its next-gen tech: A shooting brake (estate) and two small SUVs – most likely GLA and GLB.

The mega-selling A-Class hatch wasn’t mentioned.

Which is worrying.

Another all-time favourite with only a few years left? I think so.
