Immersed founder Renji Bijoy held a full reveal of the company’s first VR glasses, called the Visor. The Austin-based startup claims the Visor offers a 4K per-eye resolution, 100-degree field of view, 6DoF tracking, and much more.
Immersed Visor is a lightweight VR headset
The Immersed Visor surfaced in January this year when Qualcomm revealed partnerships with the American startup. This Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) headset is powered by Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset and weighs just 186 grams.
Immersed founder Renji Bijoy unveiled the headset at an event held in Austin. According to Engadget, the Immersed Visor is closer to a pair of glasses than a complete VR and MR headset.
Immersed claims the Visor offers each eye the equivalent of a 4K OLED screen. If the Snapdragon chipset’s capabilities are fully utilized, the display could support 90fps.
The Immersed Visor has a 100-degree field of view. Moreover, users can choose to operate in a passthrough view or an entirely virtual one. The software powering the setup also allows “shared space” for a more communal feel.
The Immersed Visor supports 6DoF tracking. This allows motion tracking on different axes, not just simple head rotations. Moreover, the headset has hand and eye tracking. Users can have streams from over five screens in a virtual or mixed-reality environment.
Can buyers play games on the new headset?
It is important to note that the Immersed Visor doesn’t appear to be aimed at the gaming industry. This is because the headset doesn’t have support for an app store. It doesn’t even have any onboard games or entertainment experiences.
According to Immersed, the Visor is geared towards productivity. The company indicated users can easily link the headset to a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer. Thereafter, screens from these devices would show up on the Immersed Visor headset.
It is interesting to note that the Immersed Visor supports wired and wireless connectivity. The 6DoF tracking would allow users to stand up, lean, or twist without worrying about the virtual screens. In other words, this technology would keep the screens locked in their virtual location as if they were in physical space.
The Immersed Visor is priced at $1,050 to buy outright. However, buyers can opt for a $40 or $60 per month subscription and get the headset for a $400 upfront payment. There’s also a “Founder’s Edition”, which costs $1,350 outright or $700 plus the monthly subscription fee. Needless to say, these prices are quite aggressive, but, they might not be as low as the competition.
