Instagram rolls out location sharing in DMs to simplify meetups

Meta announced new updates for Instagram on Monday, unveiling features to enhance private messaging. Among these is the Instagram DMs location-sharing tool, which aims to make coordinating in-person gatherings easier.

Users can now share live locations or pin spots on a map directly in private or group chats on the app. This feature promises to efficiently reduce the hassle of finding each other in crowded venues or planning meetups.

Location-sharing feature to enhance safety and convenience

The Instagram DMs location-sharing tool allows users to share their live location for up to an hour or send a pinned location for fixed meetups. These options, designed for safety and privacy, ensure only chat participants can see the area, which cannot be forwarded to others.

Location sharing is off by default, giving users control over when and with whom they share this data. The feature includes a visible indicator at the top of the chat, reminding users when live sharing is active.

In addition to location sharing, Instagram now offers nicknames for contacts in DMs. This tool lets users personalize chats by creating custom names for friends or themselves, adding a layer of humor or simplicity to conversations.

Nicknames are visible only in private chats and do not alter usernames elsewhere on the platform. Users can edit or disable nicknames anytime, making the feature both dynamic and user-friendly.

Meta also introduced 17 new sticker packs for Instagram DMs, featuring over 300 designs. Users can now express emotions or reactions creatively, using favorites or custom stickers shared by friends.

This updated sticker feature offers an improved DM sticker tray, making finding and reusing stickers easier for a better chat experience.

Available in select countries

The company emphasized user privacy while launching these features. The Instagram DMs location-sharing functionality is available in select countries and remains accessible only in private messaging.

The live location expires after an hour, further safeguarding user privacy. Meta urges users to share locations only with trusted contacts to avoid misuse.
